Speech with Milo: Nouns is another app offered by developer Doonan Speech Therapy. Developed by speech language pathologists, this app focuses on building students’ vocabulary with a unique video interface that puts the user right into the program. Instead of simple button pushing, this app actually focuses on the students’ pronunciation and vocabulary building, making it a great educational tool.
Speech with Milo apps are regularly high quality and engaging in a classroom and Speech with Milo: Nouns is no different. The app is very simple to use and is a good creation based app. This means that the kids are not just pushing buttons; they are actually interacting with the app and creating a finished product.
The app has a lengthy list of nouns, sorted by category that the adult can turn off or on, depending on the purpose for using the app. Once the teacher or parent customizes the word list, the user simply hits go and is presented with the first noun. The unique aspect of this app is that it incorporates the user facing camera on iPads 2 and more recent. As the word is stated, a cute picture is placed on screen along with the image of the user. The pictures are high quality illustrations, positioned to include the user’s face. For example, the animals have an opening in the middle so it is the user’s face surrounded by a lion head. A book is open and at the bottom so it looks like the user is holding an open book. A shirt is at the bottom with an open neck, so the user’s head fits on the shirt. The player repeats the word and can watch his or her own sound formation on screen.
The other major aspect of this app is that it not only places the user’s face on screen, it can also record videos while the student uses the app. This allows speech pathologists and teachers to collect data, allows students to record themselves creating sounds, and allows for sharing the videos with parents as a home-school communication tool.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app is unique in its video sharing capabilities as far as speech and articulation apps go. The ease with which a user or teacher can record a student and share the video is wonderful. The sharing capability is the same as when sharing images or videos from the image gallery on the iPad. Simply send a secure email to the parent with the students’ video. No public sharing is necessary – meaning this is a confidential and safe way to share images.
The illustrations are really cute and young users will be easily engaged in making sure that their face is placed perfectly for each shot. While the interaction with the app is simple, users simply repeat the stated noun, with adult direction, the app is a great teaching device. It is a unique way to add a little bit of fun to what can often be rote practice of sound and word drills.
Overall, Speech with Milo: Nouns is a nice teaching tool for speech language pathologists, teachers, or parents looking to get students engaged in working on word formation and sounds. The video capabilities provide an excellent platform for sharing student work and for data collection. This tool could easily find a home in many different styles of classroom.
